White House official: New Iran sanctions coming ‘very soon’

Written by on May 8, 2019

On the one-year anniversary of U.S. withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, a White House official announced that additional sanctions against Iran would be coming soon.

Tim Morrison, the National Security Council’s senior director for weapons of mass destruction and biodefense, said Wednesday that Iran will be facing a fresh round of sanctions.

“Expect more sanctions soon,” Morrison said at an event put on by the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. “Very soon.”

The news came on the same day as Iranian President Hassan Rouhani announced that the country would stop complying with parts of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. The nuclear deal looked to limit Iran’s nuclear program, although the Trump administration withdrew from the treaty a year ago today, calling it too weak and one-sided.

Rouhani announced Wednesday that Iran would soon start stockpiling low-enriched uranium and heavy water, a violation of the treaty.

The news comes after U.S. officials deployed the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group and a bomber task force to the Middle East region in response to “troubling and escalatory indications and warnings” from Iran.
